Build Your Own Computer

  • In this course you have learned about the hardware and operating systems used in most computer systems. In this project you will build a computer from component parts, install the operating system and create a running system at the end of the project. In this project you will complete two major phases.

1) Assemble the component parts of a computer system.

- Motherboards.com: How to Build a Computer

- Easy PC: How to Build a PC

- Waterwheel.com|Waterwheel.com: How to Build a PC

- PC Mechanic: Build Your Own PC

- Checking and Testing Components

2) Document the procedures used in a Wiki of your work.

What type of system will you build?

The system you will build is a basic system you might find in the average computer user’s home. It has a 2.4GHz Intel Celeron processor, 256MB of RAM, a 80GB hard Drive, a CD-ROM Drive and a floppy drive. The motherboard includes on-board video, audio and USB.

Assembly Phase

When your team starts this project you will be given the following items. It is your responsibility to keep track of your inventory, so you can complete the project and receive a grade. You will complete the tasks in the order listed, with two group members working on each task. Each group member must be involved in at least two installation tasks.

Tasks:

- Motherboard installation, including LED and USB connections.

- CPU, Heat Sink and Fan Assembly.

- Hard Drive

- CD-ROM Drive

- Floppy Drive

- Memory

- Operating System installation

Documentation Phase:

Wiki:

As you build your system, you will also be creating a wiki of your activities. A Wiki is a website, where many people can collaborate on a single project. Your wiki will have a page devoted to each component or the OS when installed. Each wiki page is a collaboration between two team members performing the installation of that component. (I’ll have a template page posted on the wiki site.)

Wiki Requirements:

- Title page: Picture of group taken with Digital Camera. All group members names are listed. This also includes a Table of Contents, which links to each of the component pages.

- Page Syntax:  When creating pages, please make sure you follow the three step naming convention when creating your pages.

1) Group Name

2) Group Name

3) Name of component installed or process completed.

(e.g.: 2* - Group A - Motherboard)

- Component / Installation Pages:

o Name of the component or application.

o Group members completing the task names listed at the top of the page.

o A picture of the task being completed. (Internet or Digital photo)

o Written description of the process you used to install the component or operating system, the steps you used, any difficulties you might have encountered and things someone else might want to watch out for when installing that particular component. This should be very detailed, you are writing this so that someone could use your wiki page to learn the process of how to build a computer.

- Summary Page: This should be a collaborative paper where each member of the group adds their comments about the process and what would be helpful comments for others.

Completion:

Your project will be considered complete when all of the following tasks are done.

- Your computer boots to a Windows XP Desktop with a digital photo of your group set as wallpaper.

- You have no error icons in your Device Manager screen.

- Your system is completely patched. (No needed patches from Windows Update.)

- Your Wiki is complete and ready for me or others to look at, meeting all of the requirements listed above.

- Your Wiki is signed off by all members of your group personally certifying completion of the project. (Names listed on the summary page.)

Here is the rubric for the completed project.
